The Department of Home Affairs invites qualified workers under the Independent Qualified Visa Subclass 189. It allows qualified workers who meet the requirements to work permanently in Australia. Employees with the necessary skills and experience can live and work anywhere in Australia.
This stream is point-tested. To get a visa 189, skilled workers must receive 65 points on the points exam. However, the applicant does not require a sponsor or nominee to apply for this visa.
Process
Applicant must go through the following process:
- Determine your eligibility to apply for Subclass 189 by determining your points of interest in SkillSelect, choosing the appropriate occupation from the skilled occupation list, and taking a competence assessment.
- Submit the EOI if points of Interest are at least 65
- Get the invitation to apply for the visa
- Apply within 60 days of the invitation.
Processing Time
Processing time varies. The Department of Home Affairs processes all Australian visa applications. You must submit complete documents with your visa application. Applications with incomplete documentation may take longer to process.

Applicants for visa 189 must:
- Have occupation listed on the relevant skilled occupation list
